Life Beyond PhD – Careers In Industry

Sadaf Sarafan earned her B.S. and M.S. degrees in electrical engineering from Shahid Beheshti University, Iran in 2014 and 2017 and completed her Ph.D. in electrical engineering at the Henry Samueli School of Engineering, University of California, Irvine, in 2022. Her primary research interests encompass signal processing, machine learning, and image processing, with a particular focus on bio-signal processing and the development of mobile health (m-health) solutions for continuous health data monitoring and management.

After completing her Ph.D., She successfully transitioned to the industry and currently serves as a DSP Engineer at Advanced Bionics. In this role, she specializes in audio signal processing algorithms and enhancement techniques. She brings a unique perspective on the transition from academia to industry and is excited to share her insights during her speaking engagement.

In this talk, Dr. Sarafan will share about her transition from PhD to Industry. We’ll discuss differences between academia and industry priorities as an engineer, advice on student visa issues, and her lessons learned.

What is the Life Beyond Ph.D. Series?
The Life Beyond Ph.D. Series showcases various STEM workforce careers and “N of 1” journeys. These fire-side style chats are intended to be informal and casual so that current graduate students (PhDs and Postdoctoral Trainees) can explore various careers, identify critical skills required to succeed and connect to the industries of their interest.

Format of the session:

  • Speaker will share about their career journey (15-20 mins)
  • Q&A from the audience (20-30 mins)
  • Individual network (if there’s more time)
